Emma Dorthea Hansen married Marius Petersen 4 September 1902 in Middlefart, Denmark; divorced in 1927.
Emma was born on Tuesday, 3 December 1878 in Fjelsted, Denmark; died 24 May 1957, age 78 years, in Reno, Nevada.
Emma was the second child in a family of four. Emma was called "Nannie" by all of her grandchildren. Nannie learned to be a barber but it is not known if she ever used that skill for an income. Like so many Danish women of that time period she learned to knit and to crochet and has left many beautiful items to her descendants. From an interview with her son, Arthur, we learn that she was a strict disciplinarian and that she became very religious after the divorce from Marius. Viggo recounted Nannie's death in a letter to Shirley; "I visited Nannie for over an hour that Friday afternoon. Left her in the best of health and spirits at 3:30 and at 9:30 she died. Sure was glad that I saw her before it happened and glad that it happened the way it did. The autopsy showed that she died from a blood clot on the main artery into the heart and also that she had cancer the size of a golf ball on her pancreas which the doctor said was spreading and she would soon have suffered terribly with it."
